As a rider you are aware of the dangers on the road, but when snow is added into the mix, riders need to be that extra bit careful and cautious. Below are 5 tips that will improve your safety on the roads:

  • Before you set off on your journey, determine the severity of the weather. Look at local news and find out what the road conditions are like on your route of travel. It is always good to be prepared, you will know what you’re up against and can plan accordingly. Perhaps you can take a safer route?

  • Ride with caution. Motorycling in snow is far more dangerous than riding in the rain so you do need to take extra care. Always be visible to other drivers on the road. Snow flurries can cause poor visibilty on the roads, so make sure you are wearing appropriate clothing, ideally with some fluorescent accessories. It is even more important in these conditions to keep plenty of distance between yourself and other vehicles.

  • Driving with more care means driving at a slower speed. It can be difficult to tell what conditions the roads are in, for instance black ice can be a surprise to drivers and can cause accidents. The key is to be observant and cautious.

  • A good tip to give you better steering control is for you to ride up on the gas tank. If you clutch your thighs tightly to the gas tank when slipping and sliding on the snow will give you more control. This will make is less likely that the bike will slide out from under you in a fishtail motion.

  • If the roads are slippery, it is wise to use tyre chains to give you a bit more traction.

Of course, these are all instructions for drivers you need to ride. If it is not a necessity, then it is safer to avoid travelling in these conditions.
